Equipment

Ingredients

  • 3 Pieces Green Tomatoes fresh, sliced into ¼-inch rounds
  • Salt for seasoning
  • Pepper for seasoning
  • ½ Cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 Pieces Eggs whisked with 1 tablespoon water
  • ½ Cup Yellow Cornmeal
  • ½ Cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • ¼ teaspoon Paprika
  • Pinch Cayenne Pepper optional
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • Prepare all ingredients, including green tomatoes, flour, cornmeal, breadcrumbs, eggs, and oil, so everything is ready before frying.
  • Rinse tomatoes, cut into ¼-inch slices, season with salt and pepper, and lay them flat on a plate.
  • Arrange three bowls: one with flour, one with whisked eggs, and one with the breadcrumb mixture for easy coating.
  • In the third bowl, combine cornmeal, breadcrumbs, paprika, and cayenne, stirring until evenly mixed.
  • Dip each tomato slice in flour, then egg, then press into the crumb mixture until fully coated, and place on a tray.
  • Heat oil to 350–375°Fahrenheit (175–190°Celsius) and fry slices in small batches for 1–2 minutes per side until golden; drain on paper towels before serving warm.

Notes

  • Slice evenly for best frying. Cutting your green tomatoes into even slices helps them cook at the same speed. This way, every piece turns out crispy and golden.
  • Use a good coating mix. A blend of flour, cornmeal, and seasoning sticks well to the tomatoes. It also gives them that perfect crunch on the outside.
  • Fry in small batches. Cooking too many slices at once lowers the oil temperature. Smaller batches keep them crispy instead of soggy.
  • Serve right away. Fried green tomatoes taste best when fresh and hot. Pair them with a dipping sauce to enjoy the full flavor.
